16 ounces milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons shortening
1 pound fresh strawberries (do not remove leaves)
Wash strawberries and try on paper towels. Insert a toothpick into the top of each strawberry. Melt chocolate and shortening together in a double boiler, stirring occasionally until smooth. Using the toothpicks as a handle, dip strawberries into chocolate sauce so about 3/4 of the strawberry is covered. Cool on waxed paper or by inserting the toothpick into a Styrofoam tray.
Display and serve on a chilled ceramic plate for the most dramatic effect. Since the leaves will be peeking out from the chocolate, we'll want to use a plate that is the opposite in color to green, which is red.Choose a bright red plate, which will mimic the true color of the original strawberries before they were dipped in the luscious chocolate. What a delightful treat! This allows our friends that chocolate fix without adding a lot of calories to their day. Just be sure to pick the right strawberries which are ripe AND in season!
