The Mink Report for Spring 2009

Ombre Dress
Ombre Dress
Carla’s Top 9 for Spring ‘09

  1. Ruffles are everywhere this Spring! Layer upon layer of ruffles are flouncing down the front of shirts and dresses and flowing around skirts. It looks like ruffles will remain a strong trend through Summer and on into Fall so go ahead and invest in a few frills to liven up your wardrobe.

  2. Maxi dresses are very big (no pun intended) this Spring and Summer. Shoppers are snapping up floor-length day dresses, which look best in colorful, beach prints. This is a 70s influenced style and is comfortable in hot weather. Expect maxi dresses to be very popular until the weather turns cold.

  3. Ombre continues to be popular this year. (Ombre is a French word that means shaded. Different tones are woven into the fabric to create gradated strips of color that range from light to dark. It looks almost like tie dye.)

  4. ikat scarf
    Ikat Scarf
Ikat prints are still a strong trend. This global-inspired, very bohemian works well in dresses, blouses, jackets, accessories - anywhere you want to add some color and graphic elements to your wardrobe.

  5. Scarves are light and fringed. Look for woven cotton versions for a young, modern look.

  6. Trench coats are huge sellers this Spring in every length. The classic trench is always fashionable, but there are also updated styles to choose from. We’re seeing trenches with ruffles, cropped versions in crisp plaids, we even have one with a big blousy Victorian-style back at the boutique right now. There’s just no way to go wrong with a trench this season.

  7. Nail heads - those little studs that that look like the head of a nail - are bringing a nice rock and roll/hippie combo to blouses, dresses and accessories.

  8. Separates are making a comeback. Although dresses will always be in fashion, we’re seeing a lot of separates this season, which is kind of helpful. Since trends are all over the map - and have been for the last six or seven years - separates let you play with the various fashions, mixing and matching to come up with a look that’s all your own. They also help you extend the life of your wardrobe through seasonal changes.

  9. Denim is very distressed. Remember that holey, preworn look from the 1970s and 80s? It’s back in a big way. And, they’re skinny! Think boyfriend jeans that have been worn since before there was dirt.
