Question:

What are some gift suggestions for the bride from the mother of the bride?

Debbie

Answer:

Dear Debbie,

Thank you for writing in! What is the relationship between the Bride-to-Be and the Mother-of-the-Bride? If they are close, a wedding is a chance to give a gift that communicates the significance of this event. Perhaps a family heirloom such as a piece of jewelry that was given to the Mother-of-the-Bride when she was younger, or something similar. A friend received an antique clock from her Mother and long after it would no longer run it held a place of honor in the friend's home. It was special because it had been in their family for over 150 years. Heirloom gifts help tie generations together and remind us that we bring a rich family history to the new marriage.

If you don't have an appropriate heirloom, you might consider creating a "new heirloom." Another friend of mine had a custom-made bracelet created that expressed her love for the Bride-to-Be with symbols of their relationship. I suspect that bracelet will one day be passed down to the Daughter or Granddaughter of the Bride-to-Be and become an important part of the family memories for years to come.

If the Bride-to-Be and the Mother-of-the-Bride are not close, the gift might be an opportunity to nurture and strengthen the relationship. Again, think of personal gifts that celebrate the very best of the relationship. Try to set aside any difficulties there may have been in the past. You can never go wrong if you concentrate on expressing the love you have for the Bride-to-Be.

Happy Showering,
