Question:
I am hosting (aka paying for) a bridal shower lunch for a friend at a local restaurant. Do I also need to buy a gift for her? Is it acceptable to give her a card subtly and graciously noting that the shower is her gift from me?
Answer:
Dear Amy,
Wonderful! Your shower luncheon sounds absolutely Diva-delish!
Since you're springing for the shower and all the trimmings, you need not purchase a separate gift for the bride. However, an elegant card specially chosen by you would be a lovely touch. That way the bride has another memento to save along with her other cards and shower photos. It goes without saying that your card will always be a special favorite.
There is no need for you to subtly state that the shower is your gift to her. She should already know this. Bridal shower etiquette is quite clear on this point -- the party itself is considered to be the gift no matter who in the bride's entourage throws it.
Happy Showering,
